Project SOLO uses technology and creativity to tackle loneliness in secondary education, fostering emotional intelligence and creative engagement for a transformative impact on students.

Project SOLO, initiated by Studio Z in response to the changing landscape of secondary education, is a program aimed at reshaping the educational narrative. It focuses on fostering emotional intelligence and independence rather than solely on vocational competencies. Originating from the question of how education can address loneliness, the project collaborates with Kunstcircuit Deventer and Het Stormink.

Fueled by support from Het Stormink and the Province of Overijssel, Project SOLO utilizes smartphones and social media to engage with the youth. Collaborating with theatre collective SkaGen, it leverages technology to create a multimedia experience via the SKGN app, addressing the theme of loneliness in a language familiar to the youth.

Guided by Art Educators from Studio Z, students actively participate in crafting a WhatsApp theater performance using the SKGN App. Studio Z complements this with creative activities that encourage active engagement and personal development. Recognizing potential challenges in addressing sensitive themes, Het Stormink collaborates with youth support organizations to create a protocol for student support.

Project SOLO is a holistic approach, from theme introduction to personal development through creative activities, culminating in a direct link to professional help when needed. As it unfolds, the program promises a transformative journey for educators and students. The January 2023 debut marks an educational experiment aimed at challenging the highschool system in The Netherlands. A post-project impact assessment by Cultuur Eigen aims to shape future editions, ensuring a sustained positive impact on students. Project SOLO emerges as a programme building towards a more compassionate, creative, and connected educational future.
