Just finished a full day in an online workshop last friday. My main takeaway was a profound sense of ‘meh’.
The content wasn’t the issue; it was fine. It was the format. The completely ‘disembodied’ learning, staring at a screen, created a kind of cognitive friction. A feeling of ‘bore-out’, where my brain was constantly seeking distractions to compensate for the understimulation. Multitasking didn’t feel like a choice, but a survival mechanism. 🧠
It immediately made me think of all the students who have dealt with this for years. This small experience gave me a deeper empathy for their situation. And it reaffirmed for me the irreplaceable value of physical co-presence. Sometimes the most important condition for deep learning isn’t the right software, but simply a shared room.
