The past few weeks have been a masterclass in the friction of research. I was deep in the process of documenting the ‘Brave Spaces’ project, a participatory action research initiative that is, by definition, emergent and a bit chaotic. How do you capture that dynamic reality in a rigid, scientific report without compromising its essence? I felt the frustration physically: the ambition for perfection clashing with the pragmatic reality of deadlines and limited energy during the Christmas holidays.

The breakthrough came unexpectedly. By going back to a methodological handbook, I was able to impose an external structure—a ‘scaffold’—on my work. Suddenly, everything clicked. The implicit, intuitive steps became explicit. The chaos found its narrative. It’s a powerful reminder that research is not a linear path. It involves struggle, doubt, and then, with the right tools, finding clarity again. The relief is immense, and the focus is back! ✨
